In recent months, residents of the North Okanagan Valley have been treated to mini airshows … specifically “FORMATION FLYING” by a group of pilots from Vernon. They call themselves the “SNOWFLAKES”. The airplanes, many built by the pilots who fly them, are called RV’s, named for kit builder Richard VanGrunsven, of VAN’s Aircraft in Oregon. The pilots are from a variety of backgrounds. Some are ex-military, some corporate and airline pilots, others who were bush pilots, along with recreational private flyers.

Quite often you will see four, five or six aircraft cruising the sky in tight formation, which may well be one of their “training/practice” flights. Some flights include as many as eight or nine aircraft. The team has performed “flyovers” at low level for special occasions such as Remembrance Day in several local communities. They’ve been known to show up for holiday functions and parades as well.

Recently, staff from the Vernon Morning Star newspaper flew with the “Snowflakes” and published an article along with the video below.
